Even the most stunning traditional home needs a modern update now and then—but the perfect balance is all in the details. When our clients came to us for a full master bathroom remodel in their traditional home, we knew we needed to create a contemporary space while keeping design elements in line with the rest of the home.

To address all of these needs and ensure the master bathroom remodel worked with the rest of the house, we relied on a transitional design, a hybrid of traditional and more modern bathroom elements.
To open up the shower, the most obvious solution was to remove the walls surrounding it. To maintain a separation between the shower and the tub, we built a shortened pony wall between the two but otherwise enclosed the shower in glass. We replaced the built-in, under-mount jet tub with a freestanding tub that accommodated the allotted space and the clients’ heights.
We used classic white marble for the shower and tub wainscoting to further increase the open feel. Beige- and light blue-shaded mosaics were installed to add color. Across the floor, we included a custom tile rug with a water jet-cut stone mosaic pattern. The tile layout highlights the room’s traditional attributes while the clean, streamlined aesthetic also helped us to achieve a more timeless quality.
When updating the his and hers vanities our main goal was to increase functionality. This required installing custom cabinets with inserts to meet the needs of each individual. We aimed for simplicity on his side: a hamper pull out, a large sink with a roll-out drawer, and single-door cabinet. On her side, features were more specific. In addition to including more drawers, we also added a pull out with flex outlets for hair appliances as well as an accessory pull out.
Preserving the home’s hand-milled moldings was necessary to maintain the room’s traditional roots. Unfortunately, some of the crown molding had been damaged. We opted to work with an outside expert to custom-mill replacement molding as necessary. We also used custom pieces to surround cabinet additions and trim the existing mirror.
