You wouldn’t expect to find a spectacular Craftsman style kitchen and living area inside this mild-mannered Sunnyvale suburban rancher. The homeowners love the Arts and Crafts style and wanted a 21st century take on it for their renovation. Working with a kitchen designer they developed a plan that honors the Craftsman tradition but is light and contemporary.
Not only was their old kitchen dark and outdated, it was cramped. We stole four feet from the garage to gain much needed space. And, we tore out the wall between the kitchen and dining room to open up the entire living area.
The remodeled kitchen has updated lighting that includes a skylight and three pendant lights over the new island. It’s an elegant and spacious work area complete with prep sink and storage. The blue grey granite with copper and gold veining on the island and counters is stunning. The granite is set off by the slate and matte glass mosaic tile backsplash. Behind the range a custom tile centerpiece enhances the room’s Craftsman era charm. In the living and dining area, a coffered ceiling adds drama. An old wood burning fireplace has been replaced with an energy efficient and eco-friendly gas insert that has a slate tile surround with built-in cabinetry that includes a section for wine storage.
